Food for Thought – Delhi is the City for Entrepreneurs

A few months ago, EO New Delhi conducted a poll on its Facebook page, open to members of EO New Delhi and their networks on the social media platform. The question was simple and straightforward but its results were insightful. We asked them for their opinion on which city in India has the best support structure for Entrepreneurs and gave them the option to choose between Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai.

Kolkata was at the bottom of the table without a single vote, Chennai received 2 votes, Mumbai received merely 6 and Bengaluru came in second with 16 votes! The clear winner however, with a huge margin was Delhi with 44 out of the total of 68 votes. It was truly interesting and reassuring to note that these Delhi entrepreneurs are content working in their city.

In a recent Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) research report, New Delhi was named the most competitive city in India. It also ranked 68 in the list of 120 of the world’s major cities. The national Capital has edged out financial hub, Mumbai, which ranked 70th in the index, followed by Bengaluru, India’s Silicon Valley, at 79, Pune at 97, Chennai at 105 and Kolkata at 106. The report ranked the most competitive cities in the world for their demonstrated ability to attract capital, business, talent and tourists.

In the words of Anant Kanoi, member of EO New Delhi, “There are many reasons why Delhi is a great city for Entrepreneurs. Firstly, it has the advantage of a great talent pool owing to the many management and tech institutes in the area and the NCR is also home to head offices of reputed global staffing giants. Secondly, Delhi is usually the venue for many industry seminars and tradeshows. It also has a good representation of various industry bodies. Lastly, the infrastructure in terms of good roads, availability of high quality office spaces at affordable rents along with access to the best banks in the country makes Delhi’s support structure the best in the Country.”

Fitting the capital bill, the infrastructure of Delhi is amongst the best in the country with civic amenities running smoothly and even traffic situation in the city having improved drastically after the start of Metro service. With the expansion and operational efficiencies of Metro, the safety concerns of city travellers have also been substantially addressed. This aspect is key to Delhi vis a vis cities like Mumbai, where travelling is time consuming and troublesome while other cities like Chennai and Bangalore are mostly dependent on road travel. There was a time when cities like Mumbai or Kolkata were the dream cities for entrepreneurs and enterprises but that title now belongs to Delhi and it looks like the city’s entrepreneurs will not let this  title slip anytime soon.
